KUALA LUMPUR, 7 Jan: The public needs to continue to push the Election Commission (EC) although the body still chooses to ignore the call for a free and fair election to be conducted.

This is because a free and fair election is the people’s right and should be fought by all walks of life to provide constant pressure on the authorities, said Mohamad Sabu.

Mohamad who is the Chairman of the People’s Uprising Assembly (HKR) Organising Committee said that therefore, the people are urged to attend the assembly at Merdeka Stadium this Saturday.

He said that the EC should restore public confidence towards the electoral system in this country before the people find alternative ways to voice their demands.

“This is why we see governments in third world countries eventually fall to the ground such as Iran, the Philippines, Indonesia, Poland and lately, Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen, all through the roads.

“We do not want that to happen, we hope that in Malaysia, changes in government is made through elections.

“That is why we want clean elections” said Mohamad today in an interview with TV Selangor here.

HKR which will take place this Saturday will attract hundreds of thousands of participants and will be held in Kuala Lumpur.

So far, Permodalan Nasional Berhad, the company managing the Merdeka Stadium has yet to give permission to PR to use the site.

This is despite PR’s application to rent the site.

The Bersih 3.0 assembly which was held around Merdeka Square (Dataran Merdeka) on April 28 had attracted 250,000 participants who gathered to urge the Federal Government to improve the electoral system.
