Jana Niaga Should Be Responsible In Repairing Unisel Hostels

SHAH ALAM, 10 Jan: Jana Niaga Sdn Bhd (JNSB) should be fully responsible in repairing Universiti Selangor’s (Unisel) student hostels which are facing problems of soil settlement that is threatening the hostel’s building structure.

Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dr Anuar Ahmad said that as many as 44 hostel blocks that were built on former tin mine sites in 2002, are now unsafe to live in.

“The biggest mistake is that the location of the Unisel hostel is built on a mine site that did not undergo proper treatment.

“This problem from 2002 – 2005 was done perhaps only to make a quick profit and many or a portion, are still not known,” said Anuar when he was met here at his office.

He explained that the party that built it should have used the ‘accelerated settlement’ method where in the event of settlement, it will not threaten the overall security of the building structure.

He added that there are also sewage system problems causing Unisel to shoulder the problem.

“Two years after the completion of the hostel, only then did the sewage system treatment complete in 2007, while the students have occupied it (the hostel) since 2005, so where was the sewage dumped,” he said.

He said that Unisel is in the process of terminating their contract with Jana Niaga due to some breach of terms and agreement.

Currently, students are being hosed in a temporary accommodation in Kota Puteri, Ijok; Azalea Court Bandar Tasik Puteri, Rawang; Mega Crystal Resort, Kuala Selangor; Taman Ilmu in Bestari Jaya and Bukit Minyak, around the Kuala Selangor district.

He said that Unisel also provides a shuttle bus service with a monthly rental rate of RM200 per month including transportation, electricity as well as a security service.

“The State Government has already allocated RM10 million which has already been deposited into Unisel’s account and if Jana Niaga does not carry out reparations, we will terminate their contract,” he said.

Previously, the Selangor Government had allocated RM20 million for reparation works of the hostel should JNSB fail to be responsible.
