SHAH ALAM, 17 JAN: The statement issued by Umno Youth Chief, Khairy Jamaluddin following the Anwar-KJ suit settlement issue, should be referred back to court for allegedly having elements of contempt of court.

PKR Deputy President, Azmin Ali said that the matter should be taken seriously so as to avoid misrepresentations done by him.

He said that the follow-up statement which was arrogant showed that he was not penitent and dishonest.

“He would rather lie than be honest to the people seeing that he himself withdrew the slur committed by him.

“Next, he also tried to give the impression that the Opposition Leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim appealed for the matter to be settled out of court for fear of a full trial,” he said in a press conference at the PKR headquarters.

Regarding that, on his part, a lawyer will be hired to reopen the case to the court.

Yesterday, Khairy said that he did not retract his statement involving Anwar but he only said that what was quoted was incorrect and inaccurate.

The RM100 million defamation suit filed by Anwar against Khairy on 7 September 2007 was resolved yesterday after both parties reached an agreement.

Anwar, in his suit claimed that Khairy, who was then the Deputy Umno Youth Chief, had issued a defamatory statement towards him in a political ceremony in Kuala Kangsar in August 2007, which was broadcast in print and electronic media on 3 August the same year.
