DAMANSARA, 17 JAN: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has been urged to stop political interference or pressure in the corporate sector.

Speaking in a press conference here this morning, PKR Deputy President Azmin Ali strongly opposed the suspension of Bank Islam’s Chief Economist, Azrul Azwar Tajudin following his presentation of economic workpapers in Singapore recently.

“The hurried and frantic action by Bank Islam’s management did not only leave a bad mark on the professionalism of the corporate sector but it also implied political pressure for the decision to be taken,” Azmin stressed.

Azrul also previously issued a statement of sympathy to his superior who allegedly had to deal with political pressure.

Azrul’s confession, according to Azmin, indirectly confirmed the existence of political interference in the management of Bank Islam and other Government Linked Companies (GLC).

In relation to that, Azmin calls for Najib, who is also the Finance Minister, to leave the management of Bank Islam and any other corporate institutions to function professionally and free from political pressure.

He also suggested that the management of Bank Islam cancel Azrul’s suspension.

“Brother Azrul merely presented an analysis of several likely scenarios of the 13th General Elections (GE-13) professionally.

“Appropriately, the Malaysian corporate sector should promote its top management to act objectively and independently,” he added.

Azrul was earlier claimed to have spoken at a seminar in Singapore, predicting that BN would narrowly lose in GE-13 with the procurement of 97 to 107 seats compared to 140 seats won in the last general election.

Following the presentation, he was imposed a suspension of his duties for an unspecified period for alleged ‘serious misconduct’.
