PETALING JAYA, 8 Jan: Pakatan Rakyat urges Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to establish an independent body to investigate the case related to the compensation of ‘Blood Money’ amounting to RM207 billion from the Government of Japan to Malaysians.

The money was given as a compensation to Malaysians involved in the construction of the 415 km ‘Death Railway’ from Siam to Burma during the second world war from 1942-1946.

According to Anwar, he again reiterated that the money did not go through the National Treasury while he was still the Minister of Finance.

“I have mentioned that it was not distributed through the Treasury.

“I urge Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to conduct an independent investigation on this issue as RM207 billion is a large amount.

“He can not remain silent,” he said when asked to comment on the matter.

During the incident, a total of 72,000 people of Malaya were taken (as prisoners of war) and only 30,000 of them returned to Malaysia while the rest were not traceable.

In addition, Anwar also urged Najib to investigate the issue of illegal money flowing out from Malaysia as previously disclosed based on the report by Global Financial Integrity (GFI).

“I am referring t the 2010 GFI report that states that RM190 billion were smuggled out of this country.

“Until today, the PM and the Finance Ministry have remained silent. Clearly, they are abdicating their responsibility,” he said.

Anwar previously revealed Najib’s failure in managing the country’s economy which was evidenced by the amount of illegal money outflows that have increased 111 percent from US$30.41 billion (equivalent to RM94.27 billion) in 2009 to US$64.38 billion (equivalent to RM199.58 billion) in 2010.

Compared to other countries, Malaysia is the only country that saw the amount of illegal money outflows increasing by one fold from 2009 to 2010.
