SHAH ALAM, 31 JAN: The readiness of the State Government to dissolve the Selangor State Legislative Assembly (DNS) earlier than the House of Representatives is to push Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak to quickly announce the date of the 13th General Elections (GE-13).

Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said that the Federal Government cannot continue to second-guess the date of the general elections because it will raise speculation from various quarters.

He said that in fact, the GE-13 delay has led to a lot of wasted time and has forced the people to wait longer.

“In my opinion, it is time to hold the GE quickly so that the people will have the mandate to elect a new government.

“I hope that this initiative will push the Prime Minister to immediately announce the GE date,” he said when asked to comment on the statement he made yesterday of wanting to dissolve the State Legislative Assembly earlier.

Abdul Khalid said that the State Government’s intention to dissolve the State Assembly has not yet been informed to the Sultan of Selangor.

However, he said that the matter will be informed as soon as possible through an intensive discussion.

“When 22 March comes about, when the Speaker will take an oath and the (State) Assembly will dissolve itself, no one can say no (to the general elections).

“I will be holding discussions and then there will be a careful process (to inform the Sultan),” he said.

Yesterday, the State Government announced its intention to dissolve the Selangor State Legislative Assembly earlier if the Federal Government still does not give any indication regarding the date parliament will be dissolved.

Abdul Khalid said that the State Government’s stance is that the GE-13 cannot be delayed and that they are ready to dissolve the DNS earlier to give mandate to the people to elect a new government.

He said that before this, the State Government refused to dissolve the State Assembly simultaneously with the Parliament if the Federal Government decides to hold the elections before June 2012.
