KUALA LUMPUR, 25 Mar: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has been continuously pressured to expedite action against Sarawak Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and his family following an expose video that connects him with the logging corruption in Sarawak.

PAS Environment Committee Chairman, Zulkefly Mohammad Omar said that the video expose by the international NGO, Global Witness, revealed abuse of power and manipulation in the licence approval for deforestation and logging in Sarawak.

According to Zulkefly, if the logging approval process can be manipulated, the aspect of enforcement can also be manipulated leading to the forest destruction.

“I am urging for immediate action to be carried out by the MACC and other authorities on the video disclosure of Global Witness in the interest of all the people in this country.

“And to ensure that enforcement and environmental conservation can be carried out transparently and strictly, particularly in Sarawak” said Zulkefly, who is also the Central PAS Committee Member.

He said that the Bakun dam project is an excellent example of environmental destruction in Sarawak when 70 thousand hectares of the forest was cut down to build the mega dam.

The 16-minute video titled ‘Inside Malaysia’s Shadow State’ exposed the logging licence corruption allegedly pioneered by Taib and his family.
