PUTRAJAYA, 10 May: Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and student organisations urged the Malaysian Election Commission (EC) Chairman, Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Yusof to resign immediately.

This is regarding the alleged failure of the commission in handling the course of the 13th General Election (GE-13) transparently and fairly.

Youth Solidarity Malaysia (SAMM) Chairman, Badrul Hisham Shahari said that on 18 May, a larger people’s assembly will be held to protest fraud by the EC and will be announced soon.

“We clearly demanded for a democratic system to be restored, with the people’s uprising today, you will not succeed in silencing our voices.

“Young people, defeat and victory does not only lay in the ballot, defeat is when we remain silent. Believe that when we continue to rise up, victory is on our side as this country needs to be saved,” said Badrul Hisham.

This was said in front of about 50 people from various NGOs and students, in front of the EC Building here and most of them wore black as a symbol of the death of democracy in this country.

They also brought two black coloured replica coffins bearing the words EC and an inscription written on it ‘GE-13 is the most dirty’. They also chanted ‘Change the EC’ and ‘the Youth Wants Justice’.

Also seen were about 20 police officers around the assembly area to control security.

Student Solidarity Malaysia (SMM) Chairman, Sadwan Anang in his speech said that they will give Abdul Aziz seven days to respond to their claims.

“We, as an independent body and political observers, are disappointed with the elements of fraud which happened. That is why we are meeting with the EC to obtain clarification on what actually happened.

“It is not appropriate for the EC to be biased. We reject any element of fraud,” said Safwan.
