SHAH ALAM, 8 May: Pakatan Rakyat’s (PR) success in defending Penang in the 13th General Election (GE-13) on May 5 was because they received full support from all races, said Chief Minister of Penang, Lim Guan Eng.

Guan Eng said that the votes for Penang PR increased by 7.7 percent from 58 percent (2008) to 65.7 percent for State Legislative Assembly (DUN) seats.

Meanwhile, votes for Parliamentary seats increased from 63 percent to 67 percent (up 4 percent) in the General Election this time.

He said that the increase in percentage of votes recorded in both, constituency and Parliament, clearly proves the people’s confidence in the ability of the PR leadership since 2008.

“The increase of the percentage of votes for PR can only be achieved with the support of all racial communities, Chinese, Indians and Malays.

“Despite the significant increase from the Chinese and Indian communities, the support from the Malay community also played a role and cannot be ignored.

“If it was not so, how could a state with more than 35% Malay voters give 67 percent support for PR for Parliamentary and state seats?” he said in a media statement.

In the meantime, he also expressed regret for Barisan Nasional’s (BN) move to stoke racial sentiments and to play out the Chinese tsunami in the mainstream media.

He said that he is confident that the people will not be swayed by the racial politics played by BN which is often used as a focal issue throughout the election campaign till now.

“The Malays and non-Malays are not so stupid as to believe the racial politics brought about by BN and will accept the politics of cooperation by PR.

“I promise to be fair to all, regardless of race, religion and political affiliation, including BN supporters,” he said.
