SHAH ALAM, 14 May: Single mothers who sued the State Government previously have been urged to register to enable them to enjoy a variety of programmes provided by the State Government.

Executive Councillor for Women’s Affairs, Rodziah Ismail said that the registration is important to ensure that all procedures, processes and eligibility are met before assistance can be provided.

“I reiterate my call all this while, before and after the suite, also during a dialogue with the Single Mothers’ Association of Selangor on 28 November last year, for them to come forward to register.

“We will work to help them improve their quality of life and to care for their welfare as pledged in the manifesto,” stressed the Batu Tiga Assemblywoman.

Previously, the Putrajaya Court of Appeal dismissed the suit by Murtini binti Kasman (Chairman of the Single Mothers’ Association of Selangor), together with 2,019 others against the Selangor State Government and the Chief Minister of Selangor.

Among other things, the suit claims for the State Government to pay allowance arrears amounting to 10.9 million to them.

Rodziah also explained that the State Government, in phases, wish to realise the ‘welfare to workfare’ concept for the people who need help.

“By just giving the cash assistance or RM (Malaysian Ringgit), it can no longer be considered as a solution in eradicating poverty and hardship of living in the long term,” said Rodziah.

For single mothers, the State Government does not only offer assistance through the provision of allowances but it includes skills courses, micro credit schemes, identity development, children’s learning aid and others.

All the assistance provided was inspired to help single mothers towards single mothers’ empowerment and to enhance the quality of life for them, their children and their families.
