Over 700,000 trees planted for the success of ‘Green the Earth’ campaign

SHAH ALAM, 17 June: For the success of the ‘Green the Earth’ campaign, Selangor has contributed over 700,000 trees throughout the state since 2013.

The Executive Councillor in charge of Consumer Affairs and Environment, Elizabeth Wong, said that the initiative achieved by the Selangor State Forestry Department is also a measure to address climate change.

She said that the State Government has also taken other steps through campaigns and policies for the success of the effort.

“Among them, we have the No Plastic Bag Day, the 10-10 campaign to address climate change and the campaign to reuse food containers in government buildings.

“In addition, we also have the Friend of the Environment campaign coordinated by the Department of Environment; a ‘hands-on’ involvement of people’s representatives,” she said during the Selangor State Assembly session today.

She was responding to an oral question from the Assemblywoman of Sungai Pelek, Lai Nyuk Lan, regarding the State Government’s plans towards the ‘Green the Earth’ campaign aimed at protecting the quality of the environment.

The ‘Green the Earth’ campaign was launched on April 22, 2010, by the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment at the time, Datuk Seri Douglas Unggah Embas, with the theme ‘Green the Earth: One Citizen, One Tree’.

The campaign was launched in conjunction with the World Earth Day to plant 26 million trees by 2014.

The figure of 26 million was chosen based on the, approximately, 26 million people of Malaysia at the time.
