CM: Bible issue will be determined after meeting with MAIS, JAIS

HULU KELANG, 6 Oct: The issue of returning the Malay and Iban language Bibles, which were taken by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) because it contained the word ‘Allah’, will be determined after a meeting with the Selangor State Islamic Religious Council (MAIS).

The Chief Minister, Mohamed Azmin Ali, said that he did not want to decide the matter before he hears the explanation from JAIS.

“I have yet to get an explanation from JAIS and MAIS. It will be the next thing we discuss because what we were focusing on last week was the issue of water and a few other things,” he told the media at the Aidiladha celebration with the people in Hulu Kelang.

On June 19, JAIS was commanded by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, to refer the issue of the confiscation of 300 Bibles from the Bible Society of Malaysia (BSM) to the public prosecutors so that it can be resolved through a court process.

“This needs to be done to safeguard the rules of law and the sensitivity of both parties involved” said the Sultan of Selangor’s Private Secretary, Datuk Mohamad Munir Bani, in the statement.

When asked whether the Bibles were still in JAIS’ storage, Azmin said that so far there has been no information on it and that he will discuss it with JAIS.

“It is a subject for later discussion. It is not fair for me to make a decision now before I have received the information,” he said.
