CM: RM10 million for the Selangorku Scholarship Fund, RM12 million for Self-Sufficiency Assistance Fund

SHAH ALAM, 24 Nov: RM10 million is provided for the Selangorku Scholarship Fund especially for the children of Selangor from rural areas and low-income families studying at the University of Selangor (UNISEL) and the Selangor International University College (KUIS).

The Selangor Children’s Self-Sufficiency Assistance Fund for students of UNISEL and KUIS is allocated RM12 million a year for initial help before students receive the advance PTPN payment or other education funding.

The Chief Minister, Mohamed Azmin Ali, said that the scholarship fund was established to promote principles of diversity in line with the philosophies and democratisation of higher education.

“The Selangor Scholarship Fund, amounting to RM16 million, is given through convertible loans to outstanding students.

“The Child University Entry Gift programme will be continued with an allocation of RM8 million, dedicated to full-time students of Bachelor Degree and Diploma programmes from families earning less than RM3,000 a month.

“Each of them will receive RM1,000 after enrolling for the first year at university,” he said when tabling the Selangor Budget 2015 at the Selangor State Assembly (DNS) session today.

Mohamed Azmin said that the state government will expand the brain bank in Selangor by creating 10 scholarships for studies in strategic and critical areas at the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) level among the children of Selangor with an allocation of RM5 million.

The state government will also offer 10 places at UNISEL for the children of aboriginal people which is fully funded by the state government through a scholarship known as the ‘Sagong Tasi Scholarship’.

Mohamed Azmin said that the initial grant of RM2 million will be created for the establishment of the Darul Ehsan Institute (IDE).

“The fund will be allocated for the purpose of education, and is not only the government’s investment for the future, but also a collaborative initiative with students, lecturers, alumni and the community, especially the people of Selangor,” he said.

For the religious higher education sector, RM2 million is reserved for the Tahfiz Al-Quran and Al-Qiraat Education Programme which is offered by KUIS.

It will be funded by the state government in collaboration with the state cooperation and subsidiaries, as such, KUIS will immediately receive full university status.
