CM: Taking down a symbol of another religion is an extreme element

SHAH ALAM, 20 Apr: The Chief Minister, Mohamed Azmin Ali, described the pressure to take down the cross at a church in Taman Medan as unfair and leaning towards an extremist element.

“Pressure to take it down is unacceptable and does not reflect respect for the group.

“It is clear that the cross is a symbol for the Christian community,” he said when asked to comment on the objections of some Muslims in Taman Medan yesterday after the Government Departments Monthly Assembly.

Stressing that a good solution is required with the rights of the church’s management being respected, he said that extremist elements have no place in Selangor to avoid racial tension.

“We will ensure protection for all without marginalising minorities,” he said.

He also hopes that the police will conduct a professional investigation so that action is taken against those responsible.

“Despite the church agreeing to take down the cross, all parties must respect its religion.
