The world watches history made as Myanmar concludes its first openly contested general elections since 1990.
Despite minor incidences of violence earlier in the campaigning period, I am relieved to hear that observers have noted that the elections were conducted in relative peace.
The people of Myanmar have chosen a new dawn, where the government is elected freely and fairly through the ballot box.
This achievement proves that democracy and freedom will emerge and triumph over oppression.
On behalf of the People’s Justice Party, and Opposition members of the Malaysian Parliament, I wish to congratulate the National League of Democracy (NLD) and its leader, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, on your overwhelming electoral victory.
I wish you all the very best in bringing positive change to Myanmar, and we look forward to a better and increased cooperation within ASEAN.
Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail
Opposition Leader, Malaysian Parliament
President of the People’s Justice Party
