Compounds for not displaying Jalur Gemilang an exaggeration

SUBANG JAYA, AUG 17: The issue regarding compounds of up to RM1,000 for not displaying the Jalur Gemilang should not be exaggerated.

Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) councillor Pooi Weng Keong said that no suggestion was put forward previously although it was discussed by the Licencing Committee.

He said that MPSJ encouraged the flying of the Jalur Gemilang flag at premises, including residential homes, but it was not compulsory nor were there any enforcement.

“This is wrong as patriotism must come from the heart.

“If they love the country, then they would fly the Jalur Gemilang,” he said during a press conference at the MPSJ Headquarters.

Meanwhile MPSJ Councillor Tai Cheng Heng said that the English news report was baseless and untrue.

He said the suggestion was made by ‘someone’ but remained a suggestion.

“Anyone can make a suggestion but we are the ones who decide whether it will happen or not.

“I hope this issue will not be played up by certain parties,” he said.

Local Government, Illegal Factory Legalisation and New Village Development Exco Ean Yong Hian Wah said MPSJ was asked to review the suggestion.

He said that the flying of Jalur Gemilang should not be mandatory for businesses although MPSJ does have the authority to decide on the matter.

“I am asking MPSJ to review it. We want to encourage patriotism.

“But I appeal to local authorities to listen to citizens and show sensitivity in their approach,” he said.

There were previous suggestions that MPSJ should begin enforcing compounds of up to RM1,000 next year should premises fail to fly the Jalur Gemilang from August 15 to September 16 every year.
