CM: KUIS Aims to Achieve University Status in 2016

1

BANGI, SEPT 10: To continue efforts to strengthen knowledge, the Selangor International Islamic University College (KUIS) seeks to achieve full university status by the year 2016.

Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said that as a move to realise the plan, efforts to offer graduate and doctoral degrees are being pursued.

“This effort will begin with upgrading works and adding several new programmes at the undergraduate level in order to be competitive and keep pace with the changing times.

“In addition, diploma and degree students are also expected to make KUIS their preferred institution to further their studies in their masters degree as well as their doctorate in philosophy,” explained Abdul Khalid who is also the Chairman of KUIS.

Abdul Khalid said this at a press conference after the First Session of the 16th time of the KUIS Convocation Ceremony today.

KUIS which is wholly owned by MAIS was established in 1995. KUIS offers over twenty courses covering a variety of subjects such as Islamic studies, business studies, Islamic banking, language and communication, information technology, multimedia, nursing and education.

KUIS is now actively improving the quality of learning at the institution in line with the entry target of 6,000 students next year.

This year’s edition saw a total of 1,896 students from six faculties eligible to receive their respective Diplomas and Degrees which was presented by Abdul Khalid.

Also present at the convocation was the Exco in charge of Education, Dr Halimah Ali, the Reactor of KUIS, Assoc Prof Datuk Dr Abd Halim Tamuri, members of the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) as well as parents and family members of the students graduating.

The convocation this time also awarded diplomas to 500 teachers of Al-Quran and Fardu Ain (KAFA) classes from around Selangor who were enrolled in the Teaching Diploma programme.

The Teaching Diploma for KAFA teachers is part of on-going efforts in promoting Islamic education for the children of Selangor.

BATU CAVES, Sept 2nd: Scholar Faezatul Haslina Hashim has a reason to smile now that her spirit has been lifted by a generous RM1000 worth of educational assistance from the Batu Caves ADUN, Amiruddin Shari. She can now continue with her studies at a local IPTA.

Faezatul, who recently lost her beloved father about a week ago, is still determined to follow her dreams to read Usuluddin and Philosophy at University Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).

“I am extremely touched when my application for a bursary received attention from Amiruddin within one month,” said the young lass.

Faezatul received the bursary from Special Officer of the Community Service Centre, DUN Batucaves Shaharuddin Abu Bakar last Friday.

She plans to make use of the bursary immediately to pay for her studies at UKM.

“I’m continuing my studies at UKM based on my late father’s advise not to study in Egypt, since the country is in turmoil. I also have to look after my mother and two siblings who are still in school,” she said.

Faezatul was advised by the DUN for Batu Caves to apply for the Youth Bound For University Scheme, which is offered by the State Government for Selangor youths.

“I was also told that the State Government also offers the same assistance to students who are successfully admitted to higher institutions with plans to help Selangor people,” said Faezatul

Anwar: Umno-BN Failes to Exercise Social Justice in Education

2

SHAH ALAM, August 21: The Umno-BN government has failed to carry out their social justice responsibility in providing free education, especially to the needy.

PKR De Facto Leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that he was against the proposal for the National Higher Educational Fund Corporation (PTPTN) to list PTPTN defaulters who did not repay their loan under the Central Credit Reference Information System (CCRIS).

“This is further victimization of the borrowers by stigmatizing them financially after having already burdened them with the study loans,” Anwar said in a statement.

He said, the main issue which should be addressed is not government efforts to retrieve the loan, but it is their responsibility to implement social justice in the field of education.

According to the Member of Parliament for Pandan, Rafizi Ramli, the move to list PTPTN borrowers in the CCRIS is akin to being indifferent towards welfare, especially for the young people.

He said that this move will be used by financial institutions to deny housing, vehicle and personal loans to PTPTN borrowers registered by PTPTN in the CCRIS.

“It would seem that PTPTN borrowers have a ‘ladder fall of them after falling’ (jatuh ditimpa tangga, English equivalent – being kicked in the teeth after they are down), as they are already burdened by the high cost of living and low wages, and now, they are threatened by PTPTN to be denied the right to own a home and a car,” said Rafizi in his press statement.

He warned Idris Jusoh to not follow through with the intent to intimidate and punish the young people who took the PTPTN loan by listing them in the CCRIS.

“PKR will mobilise campaigns throughout the country to protest against this intent until it is cancelled by Barisan Nasional,” he said.

Graduates PTPTN Loan Listed Under the CCRIS, Umno-BN Cronies Go Free

2

SHAH ALAM, August 20: The Umno-BN Government has failed to defend the rights of its citizens when they made the decision to list PTPTN defaulters under the Central Credit Reference Information System (CCRIS), but let corruption, leakages and loans by cronies grow.

PKR Communications Director, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said that the announcement by the Second Minister of Education, Idris Jusoh, is yet another failure of the Umno-BN government in implementing pro-people national education policies.

He said that while low-income students are chased and hounded for debt collection, the Umno-BN government has not taken any decisive action to overcome the problem of illegal money flows in the country which is the third highest in the world from 2001-2010, totaling to over RM800 billion.

Previously, Pakatan leaders revealed corporate loan scandals such as the loan by Datuk Tajudin Ramli amounting to RM584 million which was written off and the National Feedlot Corporation (NFC) scandal associated with Datuk Shahrizat Jalil’s family amounting to RM250 million, both of which did not incur any stern action by the government.

At the same time, university student’s debts of only tens of thousands are incessantly demanded for and chased under any circumstances, including not being allowed to go out of the country.

According to Nik Nazmi, the PTPTN policy which is attached with the liberalisation and corporatisation of higher education has become a burden faced by the younger generation in this country.

“In addition to low wages and salaries, as well as high home and car prices, they are faced with various prolonged debt,” said Nik Nazmi in a press statement.

He said, according to the Bank Negara (National Bank), household debt has increased by 12 percent every year over the last five years.

“The bankruptcy rate has also continued to increase from year to year, and among the main group who fall victim are the young people,” he said.

Nik Nazmi explained that most students who use the PTPTN facility are those from low and low-medium income families.

“If their family could afford it, of course they would not take a loan from the PTPTN fund,” he stressed.

He added that Pakatan leaders do not dispute the need for borrowers who are able and have good income to repay their PTPTN loan.

However, what is being disputed is the fate of the majority of borrowers who have been struggling with the high cost of living and come from ordinary families.

“The policy of giving discounts to those who repay their entire PTPTN debts in a lump sum made in the 203 budget is unfair because those who benefit from it have good financial positions.

“As a result, education can no longer be a catalyst for social mobility to enable those from low-income families to have an opportunity of a better life, instead it widens the gap between the rich and the poor in our country,” he said.

Nik Nazmi added that this new policy proves that Umno-BN still wants to make education a commodity and privilege for those who can afford it.

“There is only one real solution to this issue which is to abolish the PTPTN and provide free education as an investment for the future of our children,” he said.

Selangor Builds Largest Maahad Tahfiz in Sabak Bernam

2

SHAH ALAM, June 30: The largest Science Maahad Tahfiz in Selangor situated at Bagan Terap, Sabak Bernam is expected to be completed next year, said Islamic Affairs, Agricultural Modernisation and Rural Development Exco, Sallehen Mukhyi.

Meanwhile, the State Government plans to build two more new Maahad Tahfiz in Sepang and Selayang, said Sallehin who is also the Sabak Assemblyman.

For the Maahad Tahfiz in Bagan Terap, Sallehin said that the State Government is in the process of repairing the old Selangor Foundation Skills Institute (IKYS) building so that it can be used for the Maahad (Institution).

“We have been planning over the past five years. We want to set up three Maahad Tahfiz.

“The main purpose of establishing the Science Maahad Tahfiz is to produce more students of the Qur’an.

“Apart from that, the students will also not be left behind in enhancing their academic performance,” he said when met at the Ramadhan Contribution Handing-over Ceremony here at the State Mosque.

To start, the Bagan Terap Science Maahad Tahfiz will accommodate 500 students.

“I hope that the number of students will increase to 1,000 to 2,000 students. That may take three to four years,” he said.

Students Protest in front of MOHA, Wants Zahid to Resign

5.1

PUTRAJAYA, 31 May: A group of students gathered in front of the office of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MOHA) to urge for the Home Minister, Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi to resign following the politically motivated arrests of activists.

About 30 students gathered near the main entrance of MOHA along with banners to demonstrate peacefully after the Friday prayers.

Malaysian Students Solidarity Head, Mohammad Safwan Anang who was recently released on bail today also joined them and loudly urged for Zahid to resign because he polluted the professionalism of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

5.2

He was arrested last Wednesday and is being investigated under the Sedition Act 1948 regarding his speech during the Children of Malaysia Night programme at the Kuala Lumpur Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH) on 13 May which was allegedly seditious.

“We feel that Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi should retreat, resign if he still fails to address this issue.

“Secondly, it is quite clear and obvious that he had also abused power when he ordered the police to make a charge on a selective basis and because of that, we feel that he used the government machinery for political motives,” said Safwan.

The students also demanded for MOHA and the police to be released from political interference which for them has resulted in the two bodies being biased.

Apart from Safwan, student activist Adam Adli Abdul Halim was also detained an investigated under the same act for his statement during the same forum.

Also arrested and charged under the act and same reason were; PKR Vice-President, Tian Chua, PAS activist, Tamrin Ghafar and anti-Umno NGO leader, Haris Ibrahim.

Suaram: Umno-BN, the Longest Dictator

3

KLANG, 17 Apr: Malaysians have been asked to use this golden opportunity in the 13th General Elections (GE-13) to oust the Umno-BN government which is described to be the longest dictatorship in the world.

Co-Chairman of the People’s Voice of Malaysia (Suaram), K Arumugam said that for 56 years, the Umno-BN government is likened to have ‘colonised’ the country and all assets and wealth of the country have been snatched by leaders and cronies.

“I have studied that since the 1950s till now, among all countries that practice in the style of dictatorship, it was found that the worst country is Malaysia.

“Because only one party, Umno-BN, has ‘colonised’ the country for 56 years.

“They took over all government machinery and changed the law, they control the mass media and the minds of the people so that they can rob, plunder the country’s wealth and the loss is shouldered by the people,” he said.

He said this in his speech at the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) talk in Jalan Kebun, here at Padang Jawa last night and was attended by more than 1,000 people.

According to Arumugam the people have only one way to change the situation, which is to change the Umno-BN government during the elections on 5 May.

This is because, he said, the people are the owners of the assets in this country and not the leaders who practice corruption and abuse of power.

“Reports from the government show that 65 percent of the people, from all ethnic groups, including Malays, Indians, Chinese and others, are in the category of family income of less than RM3,000.

“Malaysia is a rich country, but why are the people still poor? Why?

“This is the question posed by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, where the nation’s wealth should be distributed equally to all ethnic groups,” he said.

2

SHAH ALAM, 16 Apr: A total of 400 Form 5 students from 10 schools will become UNISEL students for three days starting from 23 to 25 April and will follow tuition for three core subjects; English language, Mathematics and Science.

“2013 is the fourth year that the SSU is carrying out this programme with the cooperation of JPS, and students who will be special guests of UNISEL will follow this programme which is monitored by 60 lecturers who will visit these UNISEL students at their respective schools.

“It is a corporate social responsibility programme that strengthens ties with the community,” said Rosniza in a media statement.

She said that the special guests of ‘400 students’ at Unisel will be monitored by 50 experienced Unisel lecturers who will guide the tuition in Mathematics, Science and the English language.

Through the Science subject, students will be exposed to eight Science exhibition booths exhibiting physics, equilibrium, and genetics highlighting the demonstration of the lifespan of fly, DNA research and demonstrations on how volcanoes occur.

Water Crisis: BN Hides Syabas’ Mistakes, Attempt to Win Votes for GE-13

4

SHAH ALAM, 15 Apr: BN has been urged to stop using false issues such as the ‘Selangor water crisis’, which is clearly non-existent, as an effort to garner votes for the 13th General Elections (GE-13).

In a press statement, PKR Treasurer-General, William Leong, said that the cheap trick in effort to garner votes is clearly akin to being a double edged sword.

“They acted to hide the inefficiency of Syabas (the Selangor Water Supply Company) in water management in Selangor as well as to defame the Pakatan Rakyat Government.

“It is also a desperate attempt to garner votes in the actual situation of dehydrating consumers’ houses following a burst pipe in the street,” said the PKR candidate for the Selayang Parliamentary seat.

Recently, BN took advantage by claiming that there is a water crisis in Selangor as a result of a burst pipe in Batu Caves.

Elaborating, William said that the incident only adds to the list of negligence and incompetency of Syabas in the management and distribution of water in the state.

Among them is a leaking pipe in Gombak on 21 February 2012, affecting 18,000 consumers.

On 29 April 2012, another pipe was douns to have burst in Hulu Selangor, affecting 12 villages and 113,000 consumers were affected by a burst pipe in Shah Alam on 16 October 2012.

“This does not include Syabas’ failure in maintaining five units of water pumps and two standby pumps at the Wangsa Maju pump house causing water disruptions in Ampang, Pandan, Jalan Semarak, Ukay Heights, Cheras Baru and its surrounding areas in January this year,” added William.

Thus, he said that BN’s move of blaming the Selangor State Government’s refusal to approve the Langat 2 water treatment plant as the cause of the ‘Selangor water crisis’ is an irresponsible act.

“This is because the real situation in Selangor is there is no water crisis, only careless water management by water supply companies.

“Thus, the only support to be gained by BN is from ghost voters and non-residents of Selangor,” he said.

The People of the Federal Territory Will Receive Water Shares If PR Conquers Putrajaya

3

BANDAR TUN RAZAK, 11 Apr: The residents of Federal Territory has the opportunity of acquiring water shares as a result of the restructuring of Selangor’s water industry if Pakatan Rakyat (PR) successfully gains control of the country’s administration after the 13th General Elections (GE-13).

Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said that this effort can be implemented based on his experience as the Chief Executive Officer of Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB).

When he was in PNB, he successfully implemented giving out eight million shares to Malaysians, including the famous schemes, Amanah Saham Nasional and Amanah Saham Bumiputera.

“So this is not a dream but why could it not be done by them (BN) who did not do this because they are not interested in the interests of the people.

“Today, we have chosen two teams, one from Pakatan Rakyat and another from Umno-BN”.

“Where one is thinking about corporate profits (BN) and another thinks about the people’s profit (Pakatan Rakyat),” said Abdul Khalid.

He said this curing the Pakatan Rakyat talk held at the Jalan Jujur football here yesterday.

Previously, Abdul Khalid announced his intention to distribute Selangor water shares to five million Selangorians if PR is given the mandate to govern again.

The offer of this water share is another translation of his ambition as a Chief Minister who wants the people of Selangor to own the wealth of the state.
