Japanese Students Join MPSP Tree Planting Programme

CYBERJAYA, 14 Dec: A total of 120 students from Nagasaki Nichidai High School, Japan, joined the tree planting program organised by the Sepang Municipal Council (MPSP) at Taman Hutan Bandar last week.

It was the third time the group from the school attended the tree planting event while appreciating the trees that have been planted before.

“For two consecutive years, in 2010 and 2011, they have come to plant trees and we have put up their pledge.

“This healthy program has evidently become an annual programme for us (MPSP) and the school (Nagasaki Nichidai High School) because we have the same beliefs.

“Which is that a lot of green trees are good for addressing climate change, especially in Cyberjaya,” explained the Assistant Director of the MPSP City Planning Department, Mohd Adham Mahmood at the programme on 8 December.

The tree planting programme was launched on 8 November 2009 by MPSP Council Member, Lau Weng Chan, who also officiated the programme that morning.

To date, nearly 2,000 trees have been planted here with an area of 9.67 acres next to Limkokwing University.

Apart from the Japanese students, the programme also gained support from local community as well as corporate companies such as Prima Properties Management Sdn Bhd, Limkokwing University and the Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS).

“Hopefully, with the participation of the students from Japan, the private sector and the community here, the aim of increasing awareness and the importance of greenery can be increased among the community,” Adham said.

Dr Halimah: Selangor IPT Improves Facilities for People With Different Abilities

SHAH ALAM, 13 Dec: State Government will improve facility accessibility for people with different abilities (OKU) at Institutions of Higher Learning (IPT) owned by the State Government.

The action was taken after getting ‘input’ from the class representatives at the Student’s Day launching themed ‘Excellent Students, National Pillars’ which was held yesterday.

This was according to the Education, Higher Education and Human Capital Exco, Dr Halimah Ali, when met by TV Selangor after the launch.

“We are deliberately seeking students with different abilities tonight to get their input.

“So after we have heard this, we have reviewed that there is a need. Perhaps the needed amenities are insufficient and not OKU friendly as we have previously wanted such as OKU friendly Local Authorities (PBT) and we will implement this too at State Government-owned institutes of higher learning.

“We will take action so that the amenities are sufficient for people with different abilities,” said Halimah.

Earlier, in a speech by a student with different abilities, Mohd Abdullah Mohd Yusof, apart from being thankful for the invitation by the State Government to express his views, he also suggested that the State Government take measures to improve the accessibility for the group in institutes of higher learning which are owned by the State Government.

He added that the move will not only reflect the State Government’s concern for people with different abilities, but it will also be a model to the Federal Government and other states.

State Government No Authority in Setting Rental Rates for KUIS Dormitories

SHAH ALAM, 12 Dec: The State Government has confirmed that they have no authority in determining the rental rates for Selangor International Islamic University College (KUIS) dormitories which students have alleged as being unfair and unreasonable.

Instead, said Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, Redha Resources Sdn Bhd (RRSB) and the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) is entitled to determine it according to the dormitory construction agreement which was previously agreed upon.

In relation to that, Abdul Khalid said that the claims made by Sulaiman Razak, the RRSB Managing Director who is also the Permatang Assemblyman (Umno-BN), yesterday that the State Government had the authority in determining the rental rate of the KUIS dormitories, is untrue.

“In my opinion, the answer given by the BN Assemblyman is not true because the construction agreement and the privatisation of the dormitory is between the company owned by Sulaiman and Mais.

“Mais authority is not covered under the State Government. Thus, his statement that says that the State Government has the right to determine the rental rate is not accurate at all,” he said.

However, as the Chairman of Kuis Board of Directors, Abdu Khalid had advised Kuis and Mais to restructure so that the fees for the hostel will not burden any party, especially students.

Previously, a group of students from Kuis held a peaceful demonstration in front of Sulaiman’s house in Shah Alam to insist that the contract to manage the hostel was cancelled.

The students claimed that the contract has caused them to bear the rising cost of hostel accommodations which is deemed to be unfair and unreasonable.

The students also demanded for Sulaiman to sign a new contract with dormitory rents being lower than the existing rate.

However, Sulaiman had denied the allegations and had said that the annual rental rate is fixed based of the concession agreement which was agreed upon with the State Government in 2007.

Youth Unemployment Rate in Selangor Low

SHAH ALAM, 22 Nov: The unemployment rate in Selangor is low and still remains below 4 percent as a result of the increase in the service sector of the state.

Malay Customs, Youth and Sports Exco member, Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi said that the estimate given by the Selangor Economic Planning Unit (UPEN) states that the unemployment rate in Selangor is at 3.9 percent, the same as the year before.

He said that the service sector in Selangor is moving positively, contributing 55 percent of the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by providing more than 20,000 job opportunities each year.

“The low unemployment rate is driven by the expansion of the industrial, manufacturing and service sector, providing jobs including skilled, semi-skilled and less-skilled work as well as professional jobs,” he said.

Dr Ahmad Yunus said this when answering questions from Datuk Marsum Paing (BN-Dengkil) regarding job opportunities for youths in Selangor.

Since January till July 2012, a total of 142 investment projects have come in to Selangor and 13,197 job opportunities have been made available for the youth of the state.

According to the total sum of job opportunities since 2008 till 2011, as many as 102,288 job opportunities have been created in Selangor.

Meanwhile, the State Government is continuously intensifying programs to create job opportunities in Selangor by organising ‘Let’s Work’ (Jom Kerja) programmes every year.

Dr Ahmad Yunus said that to create a group of pro-active youths, the State Government has created a technical training scheme to train youths held at technical colleges in Selangor.

“For example, INPENS college in Selangor is providing technical courses to assist youths from middle (income) to lower (income) groups so that the youth in the state will be able to acquire suitable jobs,” the Sijangkang Assemblyman said.
