MBPJ adapts ‘Green City’ to build carpark for LRT station

PETALING JAYA, 4 Aug: The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has identified suitable areas to carry out the construction of carpark facilities on the land near the electrical towers near Light Rail Transit (LRT) stations around Petaling Jaya.

The MBPJ Mayor, Datin Paduka Alinah Ahmad, said that the construction of the facility is to accommodate the lack of carparks near LRT stations previously encountered by public transport users.

She said that the move is expected to reduce the problem of users parking illegally in residential and commercial areas that cause traffic disruption and congestion.

“This is an initiative taken by MBPJ to encourage the public to use the facility,” she said, quoted from Sinar Harian.

Alinah said that MBPJ has already received the Temporary Occupation Licence (TOL) at four electrical tower areas near LRT stations with an annual cost payment of RM2.42 million.

Among the areas identified are Asia Jaya, Taman Paramount, Taman Bahagia and Kelana Jaya.

“The project to build carparks at the Asia Jaya LRT station began November 22 last year and the construction work was fully completed on June 20,” she said.

She said that MBPJ is adapting the Green City approach in the project and the infiltration method at parking spaces use ‘green create pavers’ and the ‘swale’ drainage system.

The landscape and building of the access will be done separately and will be completed in the near future.

“The construction of the carpark at the Taman Paramount LRT station involves the provision of 347 parking spaces and Taman Bahagia has 500 spaces. It is expected to begin in October and be completed by April 2015,” she said.

She said for the construction of the carpark at the Kelana Jaya station, it will be done by Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad.
