Surendran charged under the Sedition Act to prevent defending Anwar

SHAH ALAM, 22 Aug: The Deputy President of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), Mohamed Azmin Ali, believes that the action of the authorities in prosecuting Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s counsel, N.Surendran, under the Sedition Act 1948 is to prevent him from defending the PKR de facto leader.

“Brother N.Surendran who is prosecuted under the Sedition Act 1948 is in fact a move by UMNO to prevent him acting as counsel for the defence of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“This move is an attack on the defenders of justice and legal processes.

“When the law no longer has the spirit of justice, then the law becomes a tool for greedy and unjust rulers,” he said when inaugurating the AMK Congress at Wisma Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam today.

He said that the prosecution against Anwar is also a blatant attack on the institution of democracy.

This is because the prosecution is not only against Anwar as an individual but as the Opposition Leader who is an integral part of the democratic system.

“The struggle for democracy should move parallel to the struggle for justice and processes of law,” he said.

He said that AMK cannot be complacent by the ‘ignorant attitude’ and be passive because it will cause the community to not be dynamic and unable to face the challenges ahead.
