22 Thousand Poor and Needy Families Receive MAIS Assistance

SHAH ALAM, July 12: A total of 22 thousand fakir (poor) and miskin (needy) families will receive the assistance being distributed by the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais).

Its Chairman, Datuk Mohamad Adzib Mohd Isa said, MAIS has allocated RM16 million for the purpose.

Out of this amount, RM10 million will be distributed to the miskin and the remainder will be distributed to the fakir.

He added that the miskin in this state stand at 14,342 families while there are 7,181 fakir families.

“The Zakat assistance given is in the form of cash.

“Every fakir and miskin will receive assistance between RM500 and RM1,000 per family, depending on needs.

Adzib said this while delivering a speech at the breaking of fast ceremony with the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah here at the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque yesterday.

He explained that for the first five months of 2013, the Selangor Zakat Board (LZS) managed to collect RM143 million compared to the same period in 2012, which amounted to RM126 million.

He said the amount collected increased by 14 percent.

He added that the number of zakat contributors increased by 22 percent from 142,000 from January to May 2012 to 173,000 in the same period in 2013.

“In terms of zakat distribution, LZS has distributed RM173.2 million to zakat recipients during the first five months of this year. It increased by 22 percent,” he added.
