SHAH ALAM, July 4: The accident at the Sierra Ukay development site in Ampang yesterday which killed three workers and left one seriously injured was due to negligence and the lack of security management while carrying out work.

According to the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) the incident has nothing to do with structural failure or landslides.

The Director of the Corporate Planning Department for MPAJ, Rosliza Mohd said that the workers were buried during excavation activities.

“The excavation caused the soil on the 3.5 meter cliff to fall and bury the construction workers who were working next to the cliff.

“Urgent action has been carried out by MPAJ together with the Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia (CIDB) by visiting the accident site after the incident yesterday.

“As a result, MPAJ issued a notice to stop work immediately,” she said in a press statement.

She said that developers have been directed to submit technical reports related to the cause of the incident as well as the proposed solution which includes design and stability research.

“The landowners should be responsible for any problems and possibilities due to the failure of reservation and maintenance which poses a nuisance to the surrounding area.

“MPAJ has also informed this matter to CIDB as well as the Worker’s Safety and Health Department for further action,” she said.
