SHAH ALAM, August 19: The optimum ratio of police personnel to the population recommended by the international police (Interpol) is 1:250, with one police officer taking care of 250 residents.

The Damansara Utama Assembly, Yeo Been Yin said that in Petaling Jaya, the police to population ratio is at 1:470, with one police officer taking care of 470 residents.

The amount does not meet the international standards for security in a given area.

“So, according to the mathematical formula, the Petaling Jaya area requires an additional 1,000 police officers to achieve the ratio set by Interpol.

She estimates that the total number would need additional financing of RM35 million a year.

“I this country, we have enough police officers, however the distribution of the security force should be improved on by placing them in necessary areas,” she said.

She said that Klang and Cheras are areas in most need of additional police because of the high population density.
