Ops Cantas Does Not Tackle the Cause of Crime

KLANG, SEPT 11: The Central Government should approach the problem of crime at the root of it and figure out a comprehensive solution to tackle crime, especially organised crime, from the grassroots.

Member of Parliament for Klang, Charles Santiago is of the opinion that Ops Cantas is a short-term approach and does not address the reason why some Malaysians are motivated to commit crime.

“We need to know the reason that leads them to commit crime. Perhaps it is due to poverty, the lack of an opportunity to study and family problems.

“So the Government needs to provide a special programme for the youth of all races or find other alternatives so that such things do not happen in the future,” he said.

From the 17 to 31 August, the Royal Malaysian Police have inspected 139,342 people and made 3,205 arrests of suspects for investigation purposes.

They also inspected 84,011 vehicles to detect prohibited items such as firearms, drugs and so on.

The statistical comparison in the two weeks from 1 to 16 August compared to from 17 to 31 August showed the impact of Ops Cants with violent crime dropping to 1,067 cases from 1,162 cases, a decrease of 8.2 percent.

“This Ops is a short-term solution and not a long-term one.

“As of now, of course many criminals have fled the country. And what will the government do when they come back?” he asked.
