Four Confirmed to Contest for PKR Deputy President

KUALA LUMPUR, 12 Apr: The position for Deputy President of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) is now set to take place in a four-cornered contest at the party election starting the end of this month, after Tian Chua and S Murali’s withdrawal.

The Director of the Central Election Committee (JPP), Datuk Johari Abdul, said that the four candidates that will be competing are Azmin Ali, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, Datuk Saifuddin Nasution and Datuk K Rama Chandran.

He said for the position of Vice President, only one candidate, Elizabeth Wong, withdrew, reducing the number of candidates to 15 people.

“Meanwhile, only 76 candidates will be contesting for the position of Member of the Central Leadership Council, after two candidates, Hamidi Abu Hassan and Low Chee Chong, withdrew.

“For the position of Member of the Central Women Leadership Council, only one candidate, Sheila Christine Devaraj, withdrew, bringing the total candidates to 29 people,” he said in a press conference yesterday.

Commenting on developments of the election process, Johari said that the JPP will take measures to set seven steps that must be adhered by all candidates.

“Any act of violence, coercion and intimidation to gain support is totally prohibited, in addition to the prohibition of buying votes by giving money, gifts or promises.

“Each candidate’s’ speech during the campaign must be based on records in the party and to not be libelous or defamatory to opponents. Any disputes have to be reported directly to the JPP and not to the media or the public,” he said.

The voting process is scheduled to begin on 26 April in Sarawak, Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang, followed by Sarawak, Johor, Malacca (27 April), Sabah, Kedah, Perlis (3 May), Sabah, Perak, Penang (4 May), the Federal Territory, Negeri Sembilan (10 May) and Selangor (11 May).
