5 lawyers win suit against police, court orders payment of RM60,000 each

SHAH ALAM, 23 May: Five lawyers today won a suite against the police for illegal detention in 2009.

The decision was read by Justice John Louis O’Hara at the Kuala Lumpur High Court this morning.

The lawyers are Fadiah Nadwa Fikri, Murnie Hidayah Anuar, Puspawati Rosman, Syhaini Safwan and Ravinder Singh Dhaliwall.

They were detained by the police when they were near the Brickfields Police Station to represent 14 people who were arrested when a candlelight vigil was held in front of the station.

They were all arrested when trying to carry out their duties and were forced to sleep overnight in lockup, Keadilan Daily reported.

The court ordered for them to be paid RM15.000 for general damages and RM60,000 per person for aggravated and exemplary damages.

The overall cost for the five of them is RM375,000. The lawyer representing them was R.Sivarasa.
