MBPJ: One-way street project a catalyst for a Dynamic City

SHAH ALAM, 30 Sept: In line with the vision to make Petaling Jaya a dynamic city, the Mayor, Datin Paduka Alinah Ahmad, and the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) presented a strategic plan to make roads easier to use, safe and smooth.

According to the MBPJ Public Relations Unit Secretary, several studies have identified the cause of traffic congestion at important focal points such as Section 52 Mutiara Damansara and Dataran Sunway, and the measures to be taken like the One-Way Street Project involving Jalan Utara, Jalan Timur, Jalan Barat, Jalan Sultan and Jalan Yong Shook Lin.

“The project involves two phases, where phase 1 began in July to September 2014.

“This one-way system will be implemented on a trial basis for three months starting October 12, 2014, until January 12, 2015,” he explained.

Phase 1 involves the opening of the road divider at 8 locations, felling and removal of trees, the installation of temporary signs and road painting.

Phase 2 involves the paving of roads, the provision of pedestrian walkways and bicycle paths, the installation of street lights, the installation of closed circuit television cameras (CCTV) and pedestrian awning, installation of signboards and direction signs, and road painting.

“The implementation of these one-way streets will involve the planting of 4,970 new trees; 380 from the Bungor Langkawi (Rose of India) species, 3,690 marsh trees and 900 creepers. The Council hopes that this system will also make the journey smoother along the road,” he said.

The project costs RM23.8 million and will be funded with the provisions from the Trust Fund Account.

MBPJ expects the public transport services along this road to improve the travel time and efficiency the service.
