Audit: State Mosque maintenance unsatisfactory

SHAH ALAM, 11 Nov: The Auditor-General’s Report revealed seven forms of damages experienced by the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque which have not been repaired until now.

An audit interview with a contractor with eight years of experience as the maintenance supervisor of the State Mosque informed that the damages on major parts like the roof, dome (including the pyramid and calligraphy on the dome) and the tourist elevator have been identified since he started working there.

Other components that were also damaged includes the service elevator, the technical control system, five showers, the clock tower and the underground pump.

There were other components found to not be working for over eight years, thus witnessing the audit for the maintenance of the State Mosque to be classified as unsatisfactory.

The audit found that the Selangor State Islamic Religious Department (JAIS), through the Petaling District Public Works Department (JKR), has carried out 23 maintenance works to restore the State Mosque, with the acquisition value to be at RM3.27 million for 2011 to 2013.

Until March, JAIS approved nine reparation maintenance works with an estimated cost of RM0.72 million.

“The audit of the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque Committee Meeting Minutes No.3 Year 2013 (11 October 2013) found that JAIS, through JKR, is in action to restore the State Mosque dome.

” Up to the audit sate, JKD was appointed architectural consultants and the reparation schedule is being drafted out at the state level.

“Based on feedback from JAIS, dated July 24, a total of RM2 million in provisions was approved this year for repairs.

“The last examination of the dome with JKR was done on July 8 and the tender for the reparation work is expected to be done this December,” he said.

The audit also touched on the State Mosque Comprehensive Property Management Services Contract document which was not done will due to payments for components that do not exist, apart from no withholding payments made for part of the damaged components.

The audit added that the State Mosque should be in the best condition because apart from functioning as a place of worship, it is also a landmark in Selangor in the field of tourism.
