It is time for Selangor Kini to add a new section, create a sports section

SHAH ALAM, 31 Mar: Exco and Selangor football stars echoed in proposing for the Selangor State Government’s official newspaper, Selangor Kini, to add a new section with various topics that can attract young readers.

Among the contents that are expected to attract the interests of the younger generation includes having a regular sports slot for each issue of the weekly newspaper.

The Exco for Youth Development, Sports, Culture and Entrepreneurship Development, Amirudin Shari (PKR-Batu Caves) said that the move to add the section with sports content is also in line with the decree by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, who wants sports excellence, especially football, to be upheld.

“I welcome this because I have a lot of sports activities and high performance sports that take place each week.

“If there is a special segment for sports, I welcome it. It is also in recognition of all athletes and those involved in sports in the state,” said Amiruddin to Selangor Kini.

The Exco for Health, Welfare, Women’s Development and Family, Dr Daroyah Alwi (PKR-Sementa) said that the time has come for Selangor Kini to find a formula to attract readers from the younger generation.

“We also know that there are a lot of young people in Selangor, up to 30 to 40 percent, and young people are interested in sports. When they pick up a newspaper, they will flip to the back first, but we do not have it.

“It would be good to add pages. After all, it is time for Selangor Kini to add pages because we have a lot of activities with the activities of the Chief Minister, the activities of Excos and Assemblymen and we also give space to Assemblymen from the opposition. I feel that it is time to add more.

“Activities to fight dengue, for example, it should be through Selangor Kini that we hype programmes to combat dengue. If Selangor Kini does not report it, no other media will do so,” said Dr Daroyah.

She added that apart from a sports slot, Selangor Kini also can consider having an art and local entertainment section without compromising the values of country’s society, thus educating the young people in a positive direction.

Selangor-born national football star, Safee Sali, said that the move to create a sports segment in any newspaper can provide an added value to the publication of the newspaper.

“Actually, sports, especially football, is not only a game but can unite the people regardless of race or religion. That is very important. For a country, sports should be developed from all aspects, including in terms of the role of the media,” said Safee.

Selangor defender, Rizal Fahmi Abd Rosid, said that sports fans have the opportunity to follow the developments of their favourite teams from various mediums.

“Actually, a sports segment would also foster interest in reading. If we look at it, fans of a team will certainly find news involving the team they support,” said Rizal Fahmi.
