Increased arrests of foreign nationals driving heavy vehicles

SHAH ALAM, OCT 10: Arrests of heavy vehicle drivers who are foreign nationals have doubled and are alarming.

Selangor Department of Road Transportation (JPJ) detected this when 42 foreigners were detained due to driving overloaded cargo, during the ongoing month-long Ops Ganda 2 throughout Selangor, which ended on November 4.

JPJ Director Nazli Md Taib said from the total amount, about 22 are Indonesian nationals, Indian (14) and Pakistani (6).

Compared to Ops Ganda 1 which started on 26 April and ended on 26 May, arrests of foreign nationals numbered only 26 being 12 Indonesian nationals, Indian (8), and Pakistani (6).

“This operation focuses on heavy vehicles to make certain it carries weight within the limit allowed and does not pose a danger to other road users,” Bernama reported.

Drivers of heavy vehicles found violating the rules will be penalize in accordance with Section 63 (1) of the Road Transportation Act 1097 which carries a maximum fine of RM2,000 or imprisonment not exceeding six months.

“We will continue this operation to detect heavy vehicles carrying excessive cargo, at the same time curbing tonto operations which has become one of the sources of harassments on JPJ officers.” he said.
