KUALA LUMPUR, 11 Dec: PKR Opposition Leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that the Baling incident in Kedah in 1974 that showed the people’s uprising in demanding for justice should be appreciated and be an example for society.
He said that although the Baling incident is a remote part of history, however it was able to raise the voices and the opinion of the people regarding the ‘damaged’ government leadership at that time.
“The Baling incident commemoration ceremony should become an annual event that should be disseminated so that the young people know what became of the people’s uprising curing the 70’s era.
“Never let us assume that the poorest groups do not follow current development. The Baling incident should teach not only historical experiences, but also teach people from the city that the people from rural areas can provide leadership,” he said while delivering a lecture to commemorate the Baling Demonstration at the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) Civic Hall, yesterday.
Also present were Senator Dr Syed Husin Ali, activist Prof Gurdial Singh, former president University of Malaya Students Association, Kamarazzaman Yaakob, Syed Hamid Ali and Central AMK Chief, Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin.
In 1974, Anwar had launched massive demonstrations when media reports stated that the people of Baling died from starvation due to poverty.
The result of the demonstration was that he was detained under the internal Security Act (ISA) for 22 months.
However, the effects from that was that the Umno-BN government had to secretly take proactive measures to develop rural communities.
In the meantime, he also stressed that the question of care for the people should be prioritised and should not be compromised.
According to him, a leader should uphold equal justice for the people to reduce the practise of ‘cronyism’ which is practised by the current Umno-BN government.
“Accelerating development is a must, but we can not allow a small group to reap wealth like it is happening now. We can not allow fraud and corruption,” he added.
