SHAH ALAM, 16 JAN: The State Government is ready to help residents in several areas that are experiencing water disruptions to file a court claim from the Selangor Water Supply Company (Syabas – Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor).

About 500,000 residents around Kuala Lumpur, Gombak and Ampang have been experiencing water supply disruptions for the past two weeks due to pump failures at the Wangsa Maju pump house.

Syabas has also been accused of being negligent because all five pumps, including two standby pumps, have broken down and doubts arose when two pumps that are rarely used also broke down showing that the water concession company failed to maintain it properly.

Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said that the State Government will be using provisions form the Selangorku Grant to fund residents who wish to submit a claim from Syabas in court.

He said that the residents are entitled to submit a claim due to Syabas’ failure in providing perfect services to the residents.

“The people can file a claim in court and the State Government will help through the Selangorku Grant to defend unfair matters,” he said.

Abdul Khalid said this when answering questions by reporters at a press conference after chairing the Exco meeting at the State Secretariat Building today.

In the meantime, Abdul Khalid said that the Selangor Water Monitoring Committee chaired by Datuk Mohamed Khusrin Munawi will oversee daily operations of Syabas, especially the action plan and the water recovery of the company.

The Committee gas also sought clarification from Syabas regarding the failure of the pump house and their short and long term solutions for the disruption.
