SHAH ALAM, 3 Jan: For safety reasons, Universiti Selangor (Unisel) has transferred 2,000 students residing in the Bestari Jaya hostels to some off-campus residences.

The measure was taken to make way for repair works around the campus area which is expected to take about 12 months.

Unisel Vice Chancellor, Prof Dr Anuar Ahmad said that they are currently waiting for response from Jana Niaga Sdn Bhd (JNSB), the company responsible for managing the hostel, about the repair works.

“Since the letter was sent on December 27, we have yet to receive any response from JNSB whether they are willing to bear the cost of repairs or not.

“If they remain silent, we will assume that they are not interested.

“However, we will continue repair works with the help and support of the State Government,” explained Anuar who was accompanied by Higher Education Exco, Dr Halimah Ali in a press conference here, this morning.

In the meantime, Halimah said that the State Government has allocated RM20 million for the hostel’s repair works if JNSB refuses to cooperate.

Unisel, Bestari Jaya campus students that begin registration on January 11 will be placed at temporary accommodations at Bandar Taski Puteri, Rawang and Kota Puteri, Ijok, as well as several other accommodations in the Ijok area.

They will also be provided transportation services, internet services and security officers.

Anuar explained that students will still have to pay RM200, the same rate as the original hostel.

On December 20, it was reported that, upon request by Unisel, the Public Works Department (JKR) Maintenance Division, conducted a survey around the Unisel hostel area at the Bestari Jaya campus.

The survey found that the land is suffering from serious sediment that it is disrupting the smooth running of sewage, drainage and underground cable systems.

Following that, on December 26, JKR suggested that repair works to be conducted quickly and the hostel buildings should be vacated of its occupants.
