KUALA LUMPUR, 15 May: Pakatan Rakyat (PR) hopes that the new Police Inspector General (IGP), Tan Sri Khalid Abdul Bakar will raise the level of police professionalism more fairly and responsibly.
For that, in the near future, PR intends to hold a meeting with Khalid to strengthen ties between the police and PR in efforts to keep the peace and security of the country.
This desire was made known by PKR De Facto Leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in a press conference after the PR Presidential Council meeting here at the PKR headquarters.
“We also hope that he will raise the level of professionalism of the police fairly, to observe the law and not to be seen in the public perception of oppressing any party, especially the opposition in our country,” he said.
Khalid was appointed as the new Inspector General of the Country effective Friday (17 May) to replace Tan Sri Ismail Omar as his contract has expired.
Meanwhile, PAS Elections Department Director, Dr Hatta Ramli wants Khalid to pay attention to racial issues triggered by Umno-BN as his first task.
“Therefore, the first professional task of the Inspector General of the Police is to monitor and resolve racial issues which have been raised,” he added.
He stressed that the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak was personally responsible for starting the statement ‘Chinese tsunami’ at the night the 13th General Election results were announced.
In the meantime, Anwar also said that PR rejects any organisation of assemblies to overthrow the government.
Anwar stressed that PR would only participate in peaceful assemblies organised by NGOs concerned.
