PUTRAJAYA, 31 May: A group of students gathered in front of the office of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MOHA) to urge for the Home Minister, Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi to resign following the politically motivated arrests of activists.

About 30 students gathered near the main entrance of MOHA along with banners to demonstrate peacefully after the Friday prayers.

Malaysian Students Solidarity Head, Mohammad Safwan Anang who was recently released on bail today also joined them and loudly urged for Zahid to resign because he polluted the professionalism of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

He was arrested last Wednesday and is being investigated under the Sedition Act 1948 regarding his speech during the Children of Malaysia Night programme at the Kuala Lumpur Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH) on 13 May which was allegedly seditious.

“We feel that Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi should retreat, resign if he still fails to address this issue.

“Secondly, it is quite clear and obvious that he had also abused power when he ordered the police to make a charge on a selective basis and because of that, we feel that he used the government machinery for political motives,” said Safwan.

The students also demanded for MOHA and the police to be released from political interference which for them has resulted in the two bodies being biased.

Apart from Safwan, student activist Adam Adli Abdul Halim was also detained an investigated under the same act for his statement during the same forum.

Also arrested and charged under the act and same reason were; PKR Vice-President, Tian Chua, PAS activist, Tamrin Ghafar and anti-Umno NGO leader, Haris Ibrahim.
