CM: No Water Shortage In Selangor

SHAH ALAM, July 4: Selangor is not facing water shortage because the amount of treated water provided in all 34 plants exceeds the daily needs of the people of Selangor.

Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim explained that the total production is 4,832 million litres per day (MLD) compared to the daily requirement of 3,000 to 3,500 MLD for the whole of Selangor.

He said, according to the National Water Resources Review from 2000 to 2050, Selangor with an area of 8,396 kilometres squared (km)2 receives an annual rainfall of about 2,190 milimetres (mm).

He said this when answering a question from the Dengkil Assemblyman, Shahrum Mohd Sharif during the Selangor State Assembly (DNS) session today.

The rainfall has resulted in a runoff volume of 6.38 billion cubic metres per annum which is equal to 17,000 MLD after taking into account the total evaporation and absorption.

“In Selangor, there are seven main dams that supply water for consumption.

“As of today, all the dams have the capacity to be treated and is still at safe levels.

“There are 34 water treatment plants in Selangor operating to treat water to be supplied by the Selangor Water Supply Company (Syabas). The production capacities of all plants are at 4,832 MLD,” he said.
