SHAH ALAM, July 2: Single mothers involved in the suit against the Selangor Government have been found to receive assistance from the Merakyatkan Ekonomi Selangor (MES or loosely translated as the People’s Economy) agenda programme, said Welfare and Women’s Affairs Exco, Rodziah Ismail.

According to her, the State Government is checking the 5,023 single mothers involved in the case, including Murtini Kasman and Zainarini Mohd Sidek, to determine whether they are eligible to receive MES schemes and programmes.

“Some of them have participated in the ‘Jom Shopping’ (Let’s Go Shopping programme) and received financial assistance for a variety of purposes such as paying off debts, general living assistance, equipment assistance and business assistance.”

She said this in a statement during the Selangor State Assembly (DNS) session today.

“The assertions of the State Government on welfare to workfare policies have always been the basis for allocations and budgets to improve the quality of life for the people of Selangor, including single mothers.

Rodziah said that the Court of Appeal in Putrajaya has cancelled this suit because it has been determined that claims on political manifesto offers should be made through the election process.

The suit was filed by a group of single mothers against the Selangor Government claiming that the State Government did not fulfil the promise of assistance to single mothers which was made in the 2008 election manifesto.
