SHAH ALAM, August 2: The construction of a bicycle circuit by the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) in the residential area here at Section 4 allegedly has created problems to the residents in the area when there have been frequent thefts and burglary in the area.

A resident who fell victim, Nadzham Ahmad Nasir, 38, explained that the residents at the housing area are now concerned of their safety because of the project which is in its construction process since the project started June (and will finish in December).

He said that he suffered losses of between RM30,000 to RM40,000 when his house was broken into on 19 July, and items such as mobile phones, laptops, cash and others were taken.

He added that the residents believe that the theft and burglary cases that have occurred in the area involve foreigners who carry out a variety of construction in addition to the bicycle circuit.

“We do have a small Rukun Tetangga (Neighbourhood Watch) to monitor this situation and in the case of the latest burglary, we did not see a glimpse of a vehicle or person going in and out.

“So we believe that those involved are foreign workers who renovate homes and drains by MBSA,” he said in a press conference yesterday.

He said that the residents also questioned the construction of the bicycle circuit which is allegedly being carried out without discussing with them or with their agreement.

He added, the RM6 million allocation for the project should also be questioned because its construction is not equipped with lights.

“The circuit is also being built behind the houses of residents, which is considered unsuitable because it is connected with road routes and is also not used fully by cyclists,” he claimed.

Shah Alam Member of Parliament, Khalid Samad said that MBSA should review the construction of the bicycle circuit for the comfort and safety of the residents in the area.

“The issue is that the circuit was not discussed first with the residents and did not get consent from residents.

“If you want to create a bicycle circuit for recreational purposes, why not build it close to the lake for the benefit of all.

“If it is built for ordinary purposes, maybe it could be built near the main road and not behind the residents’ houses,” he said.

Khalid hopes that the problem will receive attention from MBSA and will be resolved soon.
