Anwar: Is Campaigning Outside Hours Only Wrong in Malaysia?

KAJANG, 13 Feb: The PKR de facto leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, questioned some people’s dispute regarding the Kajang by-election, claiming that it is being done outside campaigning hours.

He said that this was not an offence in other countries, except for Malaysia.

However, Anwar is willing to cooperate with the police in helping them conduct investigations.

“I have never heard that campaigning before the campaign period is wrong. Only in Malaysia, the police needs to investigate. So, investigate. Investigate the right way.

“I’ll write a letter to the MOHA (Ministry of Home Affairs). Investigate robbery and snatch theft. It always comes back to wanting to investigate Anwar,” he said in his talk at the Penghulu Complex at Batu 10.

Previously, the police confirmed that three investigation papers have been opened against Anwar in relation to his move to campaign before the nomination of candidates for the Kajang by-election.

The investigation was referred under Section 9 (5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 for failure to submit any written statement 10 days prior to the campaign.

However, the Election Commission (EC) has no power to take any action against any party that has begun campaigning for the Kajang State Legislative Assembly (DUN) by-election as the campaigning period has yet to begin.

In the meantime, he also expressed confidence that Pakatan Rakyat’s (PR) efforts to capture Putrajaya from being dominated by Barisan Nasional (BN) will be fruitful because of the increase in cost of living which will provoke the peoples’ outrage.

“I am confident that we can govern. Insya-Allah; with the people’s anger regarding the increasing prices.

“I am confident, Kajang…we will increase the strength of Selangor, our economy and our growth,” he said.
