Kajang Voters Advised to not Easily Submit Copied of Identification Cards

KAJANG, 20 Mar: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) is reminding all voters in Kajang to not hand over copies of the identification cards to parties who have been allegedly trying to abuse it in the Kajang by-election on 23 March.

The Speaker of the Penang State Legislative Assembly (DUN), Datuk Law Choo Kiang, said that they have received complaints from voters in Kajang who have been asked to submit their identification cards to someone, claiming to be for record keeping purposes.

He said that it is feared that this tactic is designed to influence the outcome of the by-election which will witness a straight fight between the PKR candidate, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, and the MCA candidate, Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun.

“We are worried that identification cards recorded or photocopied will be misused later on.

“So we urge anyone (voters) who have given a copy of their identification card to immediately recover it and make sure that their records have been erased,” he said in a press conference at the PKR Main Operations Room today.

Law said that the abuse of identification cards to make a person a ‘phantom member’ in a party is a tactic that was used previously during the General Elections (GE).

He said that voters often face such tactics during programmes, dinner events or talks during the campaign period.

“We have received complaints previously that the identification cards are misused to take out a bank loan and so on.

“I have also received a complaint in Taman Sepakat Indah from a woman saying that a case like this happened in Kajang yesterday (19 March),” he said.
