Increase in bicycle tracks, realise Shah Alam’s mission of becoming a city of sports

SHAH ALAM, 30 May: The Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) continues to move towards realising their mission of becoming a city of sports, either through organising programmes or through administration and development policies.

The Mayor, Datuk Mohd Jaafar Mohd Atan, said that the effort is in line with the intention to create a developed city with citizens and residents who are healthy.

He said that MBSA started to lobby the construction of bicycle tracks in the Planning Permission (PP) of the new development project to achieve this goal.

“Among others, we require the construction of a 90 kilometre bicycle track on the Elima West PP by its developer, Sime Darby.

“At first, they did not see what we wanted, but when we showed them, they understood and agreed to carry it out.

“They saw that the track is not just for bicycles, but could be a pedestrian walkway, for jogging, for child strollers and other beneficial activities,” he said recently.

Previously, MBSA also actively organised various sport programmes like cycling competitions, youth football and the Foo Kok Keong Badminton Cup.

At the same time, Mohd Jaafar said that MBSA is now actively lobbying the construction of a locked bicycle parking area at the eight Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) stations that will be built in Shah Alam.

“With this, the young people in the surrounding area can just cycle to BRT stations before heading to their main destination. So they do not need to drive cars and this can save fuel, reduce pollution and they can have healthy bodies,” he said.

Earlier, the Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, announced that the BRT is part of the Selangor State Structural Plan 2035, in efforts to provide public transportation to the people.

The project, developed by the Prasarana Group, will provide a dedicated bus lane through the middle of the Federal Highway between Kuala Lumpur and Klang, through Shah Alam.
