SHAH ALAM, 29 May: The Raja Muda Perak, Raja Dr Nazrin Shah, was declared today as the 35th Sultan of Perak, replacing his father, Sultan Azlan Shah, who passed away yesterday.
This was announced by the Orang Kaya Bendehara Seri Maharaja, General (Rtd) Tan Sri Mohd Zahidi Zainuddin, at the appointment and declaration ceremony, which was held at Balairun Seri Istana Iskandariah, Kuala Kangsar, before the burial ceremony of the late Sultan Azlan Shah.
Quoting Malaysia Kini, the decision to appoint him as the Sultan of Perak was just made at a special meeting at the Perak Dewan Negara yesterday evening.
Raja Nazrin was born on 27 November 1956 and is the eldest prince of Sultan Azlan Shah.
He has a Doctorate in Philosophy in the field of Politics, Economy and Government from the University of Harvard, the United States.
Sultan Azlan Shah passed away at 1.30 pm yesterday and his remains will be buried at the Kuala Kangsar Royal Mausoleum after the Asr prayers.
