Nurul Izzah: BN exempts GST on lobsters to let crony companies profit

KUALA LUMPUR, 23 Oct: The government’s move to exempt lobsters from being charged the goods and services tax (GST) does not help the majority of the people.

This is because lobsters are considered as luxury seafood which is only normally available at prestigious hotels.

The Member of Parliament for Lembah Pantai, Nurul Izzah Anwar, said that the GST exempt on lobsters will only profit the middle class and Barisan Nasional (BN) cronies who are involved in the business.

“BN is reputedly the best government in the world. The people seemingly have to be thankful to the government for being so smart in implementing the GST which ‘does not pressure’ the people. When I saw the list of goods not charged the GST, I was shocked to find that lobsters are exempt from the GST.

“When I reviewed it, lobsters are expensive and the food of the wealthy. When I looked into it, Yayasan Sabah will invest one restaurant that specially sells lobster dishes.

“Lobsters are sold in the famous hotels in Kuala Lumpur,” said Nurul Izzah when she was a panellist at the Bicara Harakah titled ‘Bajet 2015 – Di Mana Pincangnya’ at the My Harakah Bazaar Galery here in Jalan Pahang today.

She explained that this proves that the BN government is continuing their tradition in prioritising their cronies, including in framework of the implementation of the GST.

Therefore, Nurul Izzah hopes that the public will be more aware about information regarding the GST so that they are not easily cheated with government propaganda.
