CM: Selangor and Ministry of Health work together to combat dengue

SHAH ALAM, 9 Dec: The Selangor government and the federal government agreed to enhance cooperation to combat dengue and Aedes mosquito breeding, which is a growing concern.

The Chief Minister, Mohamed Azmin Ali, said that the 2014 statics show an increase of almost 30,000 cases reported compared to the same period last year.

He said that this situation has invited concern from the Ministry of Health to jointly examine proactive measures to deal with dengue.

“This problem must be solved and the cause and prevention should be a priority with cleanliness programmes given attention.

“Since two months ago, the state government has also give special attention to this aspect, particularly to the cleaning of solid waste with additional expenditure of RM32 million which was channelled to all local authorities,” he said during a media conference today.

Prior to this, he received a courtesy call form the Minister of Health, Datuk Seri S.Subramaniam at his office at the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Building.

Also present was the Exco for Health, Dr Daroyah Alwi, and the Ministry of Health Chief Secretary, Datuk Farida Mohd Ali, as well as representatives of departments and local authorities.

Commenting on this meeting, Subramaniam said that the main agenda is to focus on efforts to control environmental hygiene in Selangor.

“The need of cooperation at three levels of government is essential in controlling environmental hygiene.

“Hopefully we can see changes with the cooperation of the Selangor Health Department, districts and local authorities, thus reducing the number of cases,” he said.

As of November 29, 2014, 48,691 dengue cases have been reported with 70 deaths recorded in Selangor.
