Former national badminton champions to play at the Foo Kok Keong Cup

SHAH ALAM, 28 May: The Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) invites the public to watch, for free, the exciting performances of former national badminton players in the Foo Kok Keong International Badminton Cup 2014.

The Mayor, Datuk Mohd Jaafar Mohd Atan, said that the tournament will be held from the 6 to 8 June and will feature players like Foo Kok Keong himself, Rahman Sidek, Razif Sidek, Soh Goon Chup, Yap Yee Hup, Tan Kim Soon and Lim Pek Siah.

In addition, the tournament, which is being held for the third time, will feature former players from Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore.

“The tournament is being organised to appreciate Foo Kok Keong’s contribution and commitment, as well as players from Selangor and Malaysia who have won the Thomas Cup in 1992.

“My hope is for this competition to provide satisfaction to not only the players, but also fans of badminton that miss the actions of players who have made the country proud,” he said during a press conference today.

Also present at the press conference was the Deputy Mayor, Mokhtar Hani; the tournament Chairman, Soon Ee Hooi, and the line-up of players who will take part in the championship like Kok Keong, Rahman and Pek Siah.

The tournament, which will be held at the Shah Alam Club badminton court in Section 13, is offering up cash prizes up to RM40,000 to be won.

There are five categories in the tournament; Mixed Doubles Open (male players aged 50 and above and female players aged 30 and above), Men’s Doubles Open (aged 30 and above), Combined Age 90 Men’s Open Doubles (minimum age of 45 and above), Combined Age 100 Men’s Doubles (minimum age of 45 and above) and Combined Age 110 Men’s Doubles (minimum age 50 and above).
