SHAH ALAM, 24 Nov: The Opposition Leader of the Selangor State Assembly (DNS), Datuk Shamsuddin Lias, today received privileges and facilities worth RM100,424.88 per year in appreciation of his role in the check and balance of the state government.

This includes a fixed allowance, driver’s salary (including allowances), the pay for an executive secretary (including allowances) and a state government official car, a Toyota Camry.

The DNS Speaker, Hannah Yeoh, said that the privileges and facilities given were agreed by the Assembly Management Select Committee which met on August, 25, 2013.

She said that the Opposition Leader is a component of the government that plays an important role in the check and balance of the government despite not being explicitly stated in the Federal Constitution or the Selangor State Constitution.

“It is being given so that he can perform his tasks more efficiently.

“This shows the state government’s seriousness in honouring parliamentary democracy in this country,” she said during a media conference at the Official Vehicle Presentation Ceremony to the Opposition Leader at the Annex Building today.

Meanwhile, Shamsudin, in his reaction, appreciated the efforts of the state government for the recognition given and promised to carry out his duties as best possible.

“I really appreciate the recognition, support and facilities provided by the state government to me as the Opposition Leader.

“I promise to play my role and give good cooperation to see the democratic system in Selangor goes well,” he said.
