IPR aid across political affiliation

BY NAZLI IBRAHIM

SHAH ALAM, OCT 8: The community in Permatang State Legislative Assembly, irrespective of their political affiliation, is urged not to miss the chance to join the Inisiatif Peduli Rakyat (IPR) schemes which the State Government has launched.

The constituency’s Citizens Service Centre, Rozana Zainal Abidin said, joining the scheme will bring a lot of benefit as enjoyed by the 424 residents in the area recently.

“Those residents received many benefits among which was the HIJRAH microcredit scheme received by 65 people, where 5 received RM50,000 loans. The total value received this time is RM684,000.

“We also have various schemes for fishermen and farmers including food stamp, ‘peduli sihat’ card and not to mention Selangor Menteri Besar Incorporated’s (MBI) contributions to single mothers and asnaf (eligible zakat recipients),” she said to SelangorKini.

Rozana said, these contributions were presented in a turun padang programme, Majlis Menyemarak IPR dan Ramah Mesra Bersama Dato’ Menteri Besar, at the Al-Munawwarah Mosque, Sawah Sempadan, recently.

She said, hopefully the contribution can help citizens who are facing the burden of increasing cost of living for the past several years.

“When the State Government spend in the right way, with honesty and transparency, the money will be enough for all citizens, and they look forward to what the State Government will offer next,” she said.

Dubai’s Torch skyscraper catches fire yet again

DUBAI, AUG 4: A fire ripped through one of the world’s tallest residential towers in Dubai on Thursday night, sending panicked residents fleeing from the building.

Debris could be seen spiralling to the ground across the famous Marina district of the city as the fire consumed multiple floors of the Torch Tower after midnight.

Authorities quickly evacuated the residents and no injuries were reported.

“We were sleeping and we woke up to the fire alarm and people screaming. We ran down the stairs and it took us about 10 minutes to reach from the 50th floor.

“The fire was very strong at that time, about 1 a.m. Then it started calming down over the next two hours. It started on the 67th floor, that’s what we were told.”

Dubai Civil Defence said the fire had been brought under control and cooling operations were underway.

The 1,100ft, 79-storey skyscraper, which is known to be popular with expatriate residents of the UAE city, was devastated by a fire in February 2015. There were no deaths in that fire.

The external cladding on the building was blamed for the rapid spread of the 2015 fire, leading to the decision to fully renovate the exterior cladding – works which began last summer and were believed to be ongoing.

High TOL rates on fishery operators untrue

BY ZAIDY ABD TALIB

The issue raised by fishery operators in Pulau Ketam during the handover of memorandum by the Pulau Ketam Community Safety and Development Chairman, Chia Mong Chun to the Kapar MCA Chief, Datuk Song Kee Chai relating to the temporary occupation license (TOL) rates charged to them by the State Government, as reported in The Star Online on June 23, 2017 is an unfounded accusation.

The report stated that the Pulau Ketam fish culturists have been burdened with high TOL rate, RM2 per sq ft, where they would need to fork out between RM60,000 to RM100,00 a year.

For the record, the actual TOL rate agreed by the State Government is only RM0.40 per square metre per year, where the rate has been agreed and confirmed by the 15/2016 State Executive Council Meeting on April 27, 2016 as compared to the rate given by the Valuation and Property Services Department (JPPH) at RM4 per sq metre per year.

The TOL rate to fish farmers (SKL) is among the lowest set by the State Government compared to several other states.

For example, in Penang it is RM0.45 sq metre, Perak RM0.60 per sq metre and Johore RM0.50 per sq metre.

The size of farms in Pulau Ketam are a minimum of 500 sq meter and a maximum of 20,000 sq metre.

Based on 20,000 sq metre with a TOL rate of RM0.40 per sq metre, the total amount would be RM8,000 a year.

Meanwhile, if we consider the total charges set by the Selangor Fishery Department for one year, it is approximately RM9,070 and that do not include levy charges on foreign workers set by the Federal Government.

The existing charges set by the Selangor Fishery Department are as follows:-

  1. Sea Culture System (SKL) License for RM10.00 per year for a system covering 200 sq metre of water surface or less and a fee of RM5.00 a year for every additional 100 sq metre or a part thereof; and
  2. Sea Culture System Boat License at a maximum rate of RM70.00 per boat per year based on category (horse power)

On the State Government’s conscientiousness to help all groups of farmers, breeders and fishermen including the fish farmers in Pulau Ketam, I will hold a meeting with them soon.

This is to brief them and provide accurate information regarding the TOL rate

issue and at the same time to listen to their grievances myself.

It is hoped that the fish farmers can refer to the authorities to obtain clear and accurate information to avoid any misunderstanding.
