KUALA LUMPUR, 12 Mar: Pakatan Rakyat (PR) is confident that the Malaysian economy will remain strong and will be unaffected in the event of a power transition in the upcoming 13th General Elections (GE-13).

PKR Leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that he believes that PR will not be confused by arguments from Umno-BN leaders and political analysts that claim that political stability is important therefore the country does not need a new government.

“For me, the most important factor is in determining the direction and the management objectives of the economy.

“Currently, there are many analysts appearing who say that if PR wins, the economy will be affected. Instead, independent observers are more optimistic. For example, Prof Roubini stated that the economy will remain strong despite the change in government,” he said when launching the ‘Economic Management During Political Transition’ at the Renaissance Hotel.

Anwar added that PR has a ‘way’ and an approach on how to manage the national economy compared to the present government which is now causing the country to experience a deficit.

“The status quo will be maintained, economic policies which are strong will remain unchanged. But, we will not allow companies to be monopolised by cronies of leaders.

“Take a look now, the closer it is to the elections, a lot of money is being invested and this will cause the country’s deficit to increase.

“There will be no continuity of the Umno-BN administration, whatever we have lost, we will get back to be returned to the people,” he said.

Around 100 people attended the programme.

The programme discussed the fate of the Malaysian economy in the event of a transfer of power in the upcoming elections.

Also present were the Executive Director of the Penang Institute, Prof Woo Wing Thye; Lembah Pantai Member of Parliament, Nurul Izzah Anwar and Selangor State Executive Councillor, Dr Xavier Jayakumar.
