Dark Day for Parliamentary Democracy

By Mohamed Azmin Ali

The suspension of Member of Parliament for Gelang Patah Lim Kit Siang today for 6 months has set the Dewan Rakyat to a new low and shows how UMNO-BN representatives are incapable of separating politics from parliamentary democracy.

In voting in favour of the UMNO-sponsored motion to suspend Lim for refusing to apologise for remarks allegedly insulting the Speaker concerning the 1MDB scandal, the BN representatives have lost their sense of what is right and wrong and abandoned the doctrine of members’ duty to speak up for the truth. Instead, they have let partisan and vindictive politics prevail over fair play and justice.

The suspension makes a mockery of the parliamentary process and marks another dark day for parliamentary democracy.
