National Security Council Bill and the road to dictatorship

Press Statement
3 December 2015

The National Security Council Bill is nothing but a brazen attempt at silencing all criticism of the Najib administration, particularly Najib himself. This proposed law has nothing to do with protecting national security. It is about protecting the political security of the Prime Minister Najib who is drowning in a sea of scandals.

Najib cannot use Parliament to bulldoze such a law which is clearly unconstitutional as it violates the basic freedoms of the people. This nation is already saddled with a plethora of repressive laws without another more draconian catch-all law that clearly runs counter to the democratic process and the institution of constitutional government. This law will take us only to one path and that is the path to dictatorship.

Najib cannot use the nation’s security as a mask to cover his wrong doings and to suppress opposition against his continuation of power both from within his party and outside.

Are we elected by the people in order to legislate sweeping powers for the Executive so that they can trample on our fundamental rights and liberties? Are we not sworn to protect the Federal Constitution and to uphold the Rukun Negara and ensure that this nation will progress under rule of law and democracy?

Everyone from Members of Parliament, political parties, civil societies and the general public must reject this bill as this strikes at the very centre of our conscience.

Azmin condemns attack on Nurul Izzah

26 November 2015

Press Release

I refer to the incessant attacks upon Nurul Izzah Anwar over the meeting with Jacel Kiram.

Nurul Izzah and Tian Chua have explained that they had not arranged for any such meeting, and that Jacel was invited by the hosts which included the Office of the Vice President of Philippines.

No evidence has been produced by the government to controvert this explanation.

Despite this, top government leaders and police leadership have spared no effort in vilifying Nurul Izzah including making wild allegations of treasonous conduct. These politically motivated attacks are disgraceful and cowardly.

In this regard, the latest move by BN MPs to take punitive action against Nurul Izzah through Parliament is both undemocratic and a gross abuse of the Parliamentary process. If carried through, it is nothing short of the tyranny of the majority showcasing once again BN as the big bully on the block.

This harassment must stop and BN leaders should instead answer the public’s questions on the various national financial scandals gripping the country.

Chinese New Year message from the Selangor CM

Traditionally, to celebrate the coming of the New Year, the Chinese community will gather at home with their extended families to ensure that intimacy within the family continues. Their hope is for the New Year ahead to bring good changes for the well-being of all.

The Chinese New Year this year ushers us into the year of the goat. Symbolically, this year is a year of good fortune and symbolises peace and prosperity. This is depicted in a popular Chinese proverb that means “Three goats bring harmony and happiness”.

Selangor, as the most developed state in Malaysia, will continue to be a prosperous and harmonious state. In line with the policy ‘Quality Development with People at Heart’, this administration will always ensure that the well-bring and harmony of the people are assured.

Variety in the community will continue to be revered and the welfare of the people will continue to be maintained in the state government’s effort to develop Selangor as a cosmopolitan state.

Thus, every member of the community must strengthen our will and resolve to have a better life. Our expectations are for this year to be happier for everyone, especially the people of Selangor, in societal peace and moderation.

Happy New Year.
